What exactly is Streetwear, or Urban Streetwear?

People often ask me for the definition of "streetwear" while browsing online fashion-related items. After doing some research on the topic, I couldn't find a definition that was suitable for me. Streetwear is a broad term that describes clothing. It offers an alternative to mainstream brands found in malls and department stores. The "force feeding", of brands such as Abercrombie & Fitch (Hollister), and GAP down 20-somethings' throats across the globe led to the streetwear movement. Young entrepreneurs created their own t-shirts, sweatshirts and hats instead of conforming with popular fashion. The new fashion was noticed by more people as they became bored with the old look. This new "look" varied from region to region, but took inspiration from hip-hop and skateboarding cultures and fused it with in-your-face graphics and sharp color schemes better known as "colorways." Over time, the quality of streetwear brands increased to the levels we see today... where people are willing to camp at stores overnight and spend hours browsing E-bay waiting for that elusive tee to hit the Internet.
