The Greenville area also offers marvelous hikes along the close-by Appalachian Trail, and is the preferred end over town in the area if youre going to do some of the expeditions over multiple days. Like the majority of lodging in New England throughout the fall season... book early.

The scenic drive remains along Route 6/15 driving Big Squaw Mountain and Ski Area on the left, and winding along the Moosehead Lake shore to the town of Rockwood. Once at Rockwood youll see throughout the water the imposing Mount Kineo using its sheer cliff face rising over 700 feet from the deepest point in Moosehead Lake.

Stick to Route 6/15 and head west to Jackman. That 30-mile part of the scenic drive is all about Maine wilderness. Youll find a lot of opportunities to stop and enjoy the fall foliage views in the mountains and on beautiful lookouts across the lakes and ponds along the road.

Just south of Jackman Route 6/15 will relate solely to Route 201, and youll follow Route 201 south towards The Forks along the National Scenic Byway. Jackman is really a canoeing center, famous for the 42-mile Moose River Bow Trip. The canoe journey is a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts and takes two or more days. Its among the few remaining wilderness canoe trips in the Northeast, and organized trips are run by local operators.
